Afghanistan

The power coup in August 2021 led to a major deterioration of the situation for the people of Afghanistan. The situation for them was difficult even before that. They have long faced a humanitarian crisis caused by military conflict, high levels of poverty and the effects of climate change. The takeover by the Taliban has compounded their difficult living situation.

In partnership with our sister organisation, People in Need, we have helped the most vulnerable people who have been unable or unwilling to flee the country. They left their homes in the face of imminent danger and remained internally displaced in their own country. Providing them with the basic necessities of life such as shelter, food, sanitation and drinking water was paramount. Direct financial support to vulnerable families and individuals was also important, as it is an important form of assistance in such circumstances, to enable them to buy food, soap and other basic necessities.

Thanks to the help of individual donors and money from the Club of Friends, we were able to send 19,336 euros to Afghanistan. For one family of 6, 150 euros went specifically. So we helped a total of 126 families.

We have been working as an organisation in Afghanistan for 12 years, from 2003 to 2015, during which we focused mainly on education – we reconstructed destroyed schools, built new ones, and organised courses for women. We also helped local farmers in the north-west of the country by building flood barriers.
