Greece
Since 2015, we have been helping people fleeing military conflicts in Europe. In 2016, we focused on helping in Greece, where our field workers provided on-the-ground assistance.
Since February 2016, we have been providing humanitarian aid on the Greek island of Lesbos. Here, we have been involved in ensuring the safe night-time landing of boats, including removing life jackets from the rocky shoreline that may have guided boats carrying refugees attempting to cross from Turkey to Greece onto the cliffs.
After an urgent situation arose at the Macedonian border, our humanitarian mobile team moved to a makeshift camp in Idomeni, Greece. Subsequently, we also started to operate in refugee camps around Thessaloniki in northern Greece, where we worked to improve sanitation, provide education for both children and adults, and provide psychosocial support. We tried to support the refugees with activities that led to their activism and self-organisation, so that they could make meaningful use of their time while they waited for many months to decide their future.
