Moldova
In the summer of 2007, Moldova was hit by an extreme drought, the worst since 1946-47. According to international estimates, the impact on agriculture and the environment was of natural disaster proportions. Agriculture is the most important sector of the Moldovan economy. During March 2008, as part of the project “Support for peasants in Moldova after the drought”, we distributed humanitarian aid in the form of locally purchased seeds, fertiliser and fuel to a total of 1 012 peasants in the 21 regions of Moldova most affected by the catastrophic drought in the summer of 2007. Distribution was handled by our local partner St. George Peasants Cartel.
