Czech Republic – tornado 2021
On the evening of 24 June 2021, tornadoes and severe thunderstorms swept through Moravia. The element left in its wake huge material damage, many injured and also 6 deaths. The most affected were the villages of Moravská Nová Ves, Mikulčice, Hrušky, Lužice and the towns of Bažantnice and Pánov, parts of Hodonín.
Together with our sister organisation People in Need, we decided to help people who lost their safety and roof over their heads immediately after the disaster. The day after the disaster, we allocated 20,000 euros from the Club of Friends. Thanks to the huge wave of solidarity that has risen in Slovakia, we have sent a total of EUR 129 815 to the people of Moravia.
In the first few days we helped to cover the basic necessities of life, such as food, drink, medicines and a temporary roof over their heads. In addition to rapid financial donations to the affected population and psychological support, financial assistance to the municipalities and environmental restoration were also very important. We were present in Moravia long after the media attention had died down. We helped 44 families. Specifically, we provided 8 households with 75,000 CZK and another 13 households shared 150,000 CZK. In the first phase of assistance, we also provided material aid to the villages in the form of nails, boards, tarpaulins, etc.
