Slovakia
We have been providing humanitarian aid in Slovakia repeatedly for several years now, following floods that have destroyed the homes and lives of many people in Slovakia in multi-year cycles. The first activities took place after the floods in Horehronie in 2002, where, thanks to the support of a public collection (2.2 million SVK) and corporate partners, we managed to distribute mainly hygiene and disinfectant products to the affected areas. Then in 2004, after the floods in Kapušany, we provided alternative accommodation for families who had lost their homes in unimobunks.
In 2010, we helped after devastating floods in eastern Slovakia and Horehronie. At that time, our aid, worth more than 233,000 euros, was directed to more than 2,500 affected families, as well as to more than two dozen municipal offices, community centers, schools and social service facilities, and was distributed through our seven field workers and many volunteers.
Between June and October 2013, we launched an anti-flood campaign to help the Spiš municipality of Vítkovce, which was threatened by floods every year. We also provided more effective humanitarian aid in Slovakia through the RISC platform. We carried out our first intervention already in June 2013 during the floods in Devín in Bratislava. At that time, volunteers were clearing roads and helping Devín residents clear mud from their yards, gardens and houses. We also distributed work and protective equipment to prevent diseases from hazardous waste and dead animals.
