HUMANITARIAN ORGANIZATIONS CALL FOR OBSERVANCE OF INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW, PROTECTION OF THE CIVILIAN POPULATION AND CIVILIAN OBJECTS IN UKRAINE

Densely populated areas in Ukraine, including Dnipro, Kyiv, Lviv, and Ternopil, were attacked with large-scale explosive weapons on Monday, killing at least 11 civilians and injuring 89 others [1].

Several civilian buildings were destroyed, including a children’s playground, a pedestrian bridge and several houses. Damage to critical civilian infrastructure also led to power outages, signal outages, and interruptions in water and electricity supplies. All this at a time when people are preparing for winter. The attacks were carried out as a result of the escalation of the situation throughout the country. They have forced several aid organizations to suspend operations due to concerns for the safety of their staff and the population in need of support until it is safe to resume aid deliveries. Aid organizations in Ukraine call for compliance with obligations arising from international humanitarian law, international human rights law and the protection of the civilian population and civilian objects from ongoing hostilities.
