Kosovo

Our organisation has been active in Kosovo since 1999, focusing on education development, media support and improving youth employability.

In 2003 we completed the reconstruction of the primary school in the village of Glavičica, thus contributing to the development of education in the area. At the same time, we implemented the project “Exchange of experience between Kosovo and Slovak journalists”, in the framework of which a group of Kosovo journalists received training in the Slovak media. The aim of the project was to improve their journalistic skills and to support the development of independent multi-ethnic radio in Kosovo.

Since October 2005, we have focused on improving the work habits and skills of youth in the eastern part of Kosovo. This project has enabled 100 young people to undertake apprenticeship programmes in different enterprises and gain practical skills. Another 100 young people participated in language and computer courses, which increased their chances of entering the labour market. In support of democratic media, we worked with local radio stations to encourage them to develop professionalism and pluralism.

In 2006, we continued this work and strengthened our cooperation with five local radio stations. Together, we produced and broadcast 24 editions of a 30-minute programme covering topical issues in Kosovo society, such as the economy, education and health. To enhance the quality of the programme, we engaged Slovak experts who provided training and passed on their experience to Kosovar journalists.

Between 2006 and 2007, we expanded our support for youth employment. We worked with five youth centres, where 110 young people completed three-month apprenticeship programmes in a variety of sectors. As a result, 47 graduates were employed or opened a trade. Alongside this, we organised computer and English language courses, further supporting their ability to enter the labour market. Study visits were also held in Slovakia for leaders and volunteers from partner youth centers, during which they gained new experience in the field of youth work and unemployment.

Our projects in Kosovo have focused on addressing the most pressing issues in the region – from education and employment to media support and inter-ethnic dialogue. This cooperation has contributed significantly to building a democratic and tolerant society in Kosovo.
