Winter in Ukraine will be harsh

The reason is the destroyed infrastructure in many parts of the country. People are without electricity for 4 to 18 hours daily, due to energy attacks. They are unable to turn on the heat and stay warm. Many families left  their homes in the frontline regions to live in safer collective centers. However, they still lack winter clothing.

We are doing everything we can to help the people in Ukraine. We have distributed heating briquettes to the Sumy region, generators and heaters to schools and kindergartens in the Chernihiv region, and monetary donations toward winter clothes in Transcarpathian and Ternopil regions.

Heating briquettes for the elderly

Together with our partner, Sumy Public Circle, we helped 14 families prepare for the winter, in the area of Sumy, specifically in Bilopilska Hromada . One family needs approximately five cubic meters of briquettes for heating during the winter. Since the start of the war, the stronghold in Bilopilska Hromada, on the border between Ukraine and Russia, had prevented Russian soldiers from reaching the town of Sumy. However, after the complete liberation of the Sumy area, it became the target of daily air attacks and shelling from rocket artillery systems. This year, its inhabitants faced not only attacks, but also a winter they had to prepare for. We focused our briquette aid on the elderly living alone in the area. Due to their limited mobility, we distributed briquettes instead of regular firewood, as they are easier to handle. We managed to deliver up to 42,5 tonnes of briquettes, enough for 14 families for the upcoming cold months.

In Zakarpattia, we will support six collective centers, accommodating a total of 177 people, and in the Ternopil region, three collective centers, supporting around 50 people. In one of these centers, for instance, there is a grandmother living with her nine grandchildren, who would hardly be able to meet their needs on her own.

Heaters for schools

Teachers in the Chernihiv region are also getting ready for the power outages and cold weather. This can, and probably will, disturb the process of teaching. We managed to deliver 8 generators and 17 heaters to 8 schools and kindergartens in the Chernihiv region. One of the schools is located in the village of Zhadove, in the border municipality of Semenivka. It is the only school in the village that offers a hybrid way of teaching, meaning the kids have some in person classes too, instead of only online ones. The director of the Center for Professional Development of Teachers in the village, Nataliia Savytska, mentioned that they have a high demand for schooling, with students coming from neighboring villages and even the border town of Semenivka.

Our regional state administrator allows in person classes only in this school, as it is located outside the 20 km zone. Due to safety reasons, no other school offers this option. Most of them are located in a 10 km zone from the Russian Federations. A school bus transports the local kids here.

Winter clothes for the internally displaced people

Our teams visited some collective centers, where people who have been internally displaced are housed. Their biggest needs are winter clothing. Many of these people arrived in a hurry with only a few bags, into which they had to pack their entire family’s belongings. We will provide gift cards worth 100 euros each, which recipients can use at local shops to purchase winter clothing. It is essential they try on the clothes and shoes before buying to ensure they are appropriate for the cold months.

We want to help more

If we receive additional financial support, we would like to provide the collective centers with drying racks for laundry, electric dryers, and water heaters, as these centers face challenges with drying clothes.

An elderly care center, which was affected during the Russian attacks, is also in need of additional briquettes and bedding.

Several other families are also in need of briquettes for heating, as they are scared for the upcoming cold months.

As you can see, needs are everywhere and are not disappearing. We are trying to help those who need it the most. If you would like to bring a little bit of warmth to Ukraine, you can do so by clicking on this link: https://clovekvohrozeni.sk/zima-na-ukrajine/

Thank you for helping us make a difference.
