Haiti

In January 2010, Haiti was struck by the strongest earthquake in two hundred years. In the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, it affected up to three million people and caused more than 230 000 deaths. We raised €260,000 for the SOS Haiti collection to help the victims of the earthquake. Since March 2010, People in Peril has been providing humanitarian aid around the towns of Leogane and Petit Goave. We have focused our activities mainly on improving sanitation, namely the construction of 60 eco-friendly latrines and showers in the two villages and hygiene promotion training. In partnership with All Hands Volunteers, we have secured the construction of two schools, whose design is intended to prevent pupils from being at risk in the event of an earthquake or hurricane.

In 2011, we supported the construction of a 3rd primary school with 10,000 euros, where 150 children were studying. With EUR 49 641, we supported 29 small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in the construction industry, restaurants, hotels, food and mixed goods. We trained 2 local volunteers who provided training and consultation in the field of small and medium-sized business. Budding entrepreneurs received small business training courses and consultations on local and international business. Courses focused on responsible entrepreneurship, bookkeeping and marketing.
