Earthquakes in Venezuela: We Are Launching a Public Fundraiser and Emergency Relief Campaign

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela within minutes, leaving behind destroyed homes, damaged infrastructure and thousands of people facing uncertainty. Food, clean water, medical supplies and hygiene items are urgently needed. Join us in helping those affected. 

Within a matter of seconds, the lives of thousands of people in Venezuela changed forever. Two exceptionally powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck the country in the evening local time (shortly after midnight Central European Time), leaving widespread destruction, collapsed homes, damaged hospitals and families who lost their sense of safety overnight. These are among the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in Venezuela. 

Earthquakes of this magnitude are devastating on their own. What makes this disaster even more extraordinary is that two earthquakes above magnitude 7 struck the country within less than a minute. The second quake hit before people had even recovered from the first, deepening the destruction and fear for the lives of their loved ones. 

Many residents spent the night outdoors, fearing further aftershocks. Search and rescue teams continue to comb through the rubble in search of people trapped beneath collapsed buildings. The full scale of the disaster is still being assessed, and the number of casualties and the extent of the damage remain unknown. According to some expert estimates, however, the disaster could claim as many as 100,000 lives.

Help people in Venezuela  

In response to this catastrophe, People in Peril is launching a public fundraising and campaign to provide emergency assistance to people affected by the earthquakes. At the same time, we are establishing cooperation with local humanitarian teams and partner organisations to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most as quickly as possible. 

Funds raised through the campaign will be used to provide the most urgent humanitarian assistance, including: 

• clean drinking water, 
• food,
• medical supplies,
• hzgiene kits, 
• mattresses and other emergency shelter equipment, 
• temporary shelter for families who have lost their homes. 

When humanitarian disasters strike, speed saves lives. During the first hours and days after a catastrophe, access to clean water, food, medical care and safe shelter is often a matter of survival.
